Review Tuya ZigBee 3.0 Smart Light Switch Module

Review of Miniature ZigBee relay Girer WGH Tuya: we make any socket smart 2022. Today we will talk about the smallest smart relay from Girer. Due to its size, it can even be installed in a standard socket of any socket.

Appearance

Here is such a small box. On the back of the QR code to download and install Tuya Smart or Smart Life apps.

Inside the box is the relay itself and a small instruction in English. From the useful information in the instructions, you can see various options for integrating and connecting the Girer smart relay. You can use the relay in conjunction with a switch, or a group of switches, or connect directly to devices.

The relay is very small, its dimensions are 41 * 41 * 20 millimeters. It works on the Zigbee 3.0 protocol, so we will need a ZigBee gateway.

On the front of the relay there is a small button for pairing with the gateway, and above it is an operation indication LED.

The terminal block is located at the bottom.

In the back, there are screws for clamping the wires in the block and pinouting the contacts. As you can see, our relay can switch loads up to 16 amperes, or up to 3.5 Kilowatts. The relay requires a zero line.

Insides

Let’s check if the relay can actually pull 3.5 kW. We disassemble the relay, for this we simply gently snap off the top cover. Any plastic card will help with this. The electromechanical relay is quite popular JQC-12FT and, judging by the specification, it can withstand a current of 16A.

The built-in Zigbee module with low power consumption, developed by Tuya – ZS2S, is responsible for the “smartness” of the device. It consists of an RF processor chip (EFR32MG21A020F768IM32-B) and several peripheral components with a built-in 802.15.4 PHY / MAC Zigbee network protocol stack.

On the reverse side of the board there is a pairing button, above it is a work indication LED. Here you can also see how the contact groups are switched.

Installation

I will use a relay in a simple way, in fact, I will make a smart socket into which you can plug any device. To do this, I will dismantle the socket and insert the smart relay into the socket. As you can see, the place is completely left for the outlet and wires.

I just connect to a wire break, where the phase is, where zero is not necessary to understand, we just do not confuse the wires to the N and Lin contacts. The device we want to control is connected to the N and Lout pins.

Do not worry about electricity bills, the relay consumes practically nothing.

Smart life

Download and install the Smart Life or Tuya Smart application. You can find them either in the playmarket or by scanning the QR code on the back of the package. We put our smart relay into pairing mode. To do this, hold down the central button for a long time until the LED starts blinking quickly. After that, let’s search for ZigBee devices in the mobile application.

You can control the device directly from the main screen of the program. Its on / off status is also displayed there.

In the main menu – a lone key to turn off or turn off the relay. When the status changes, the icon in the application also changes.

From useful – you can set a timer for changing the status of the device, if it was turned on – turn off, and vice versa.

It is possible to create different schedules for the days of the week.

But the rest of the items turned out to be inoperative. Why I don’t know, it will probably be corrected in the next firmware, but at the moment neither the cyclic timer, nor the random timer and the “jogging” mode – DOES NOT WORK.

It is a pity that it is the jogging mode that does not retain its status, so the relay could be used for brief switching of contacts. I could have used it instead of the Sonoff relay from my previous review.

The firmware at the time of writing the review is V1.0.0, no updates yet.

In additional settings, you can set the operating mode of the relay after a power outage. And also change the operating mode. I cannot say anything about these modes in detail, they also do not work. The state is not saved.

Connection with switch

The second connection option is the ability to connect a conventional switch and a smart relay. To do this, we use the connection from the option above, but connect a simple switch to the contacts S1 and S2.

You can even use pass-through switches, which is also quite convenient. The scheme will be like this.

Now the lighting can be controlled both from a mobile application and a familiar switch. This is convenient when not everyone is at home with gadgets, but at the same time the switch does not “cut off” the voltage on the smart lamp. I have a smart Xiaomi lamp, I have my own scenarios, but it’s worth it, someone just turn off the light with a switch, and that’s it, all the scenarios won’t work. And such a bundle will be perfectly used both in smart home scenarios and for simple switching on / off the light. For example, we set the script to turn on the lighting at 18-00 and turn it off at 19-00. But we suddenly wanted to sleep at 20-25. The phone in the other room is charging, so just press the switch button. If you need to turn on the light, you can also do it again with the switch or through the control menu on your mobile phone.

This relay was perfect for my tasks. I installed this relay next to the extractor hood in the bathroom. Now, according to the automation condition, the hood will work when the motion sensor is triggered and after 2 minutes, if there is no movement, it will turn off. There are plans to add an additional trigger for humidity.

Total

In general, for their money, this is an excellent solution for controlling household appliances or lighting. At the moment, I have not seen fewer devices, and I think there will not be, since 70% of the case is an electromechanical relay. But there are also disadvantages, the presence of a zero line is required, as well as the lack of energy monitoring. Although for that kind of money, I frankly did not expect to see monitoring. The thing really turned out to be functional and convenient, and most importantly not expensive. I am satisfied with the purchase.
