TicWatch Pro Review: Option with NFC, GPS, IP68 and Wear OS by Google

Review Inexpensive TicWatch Pro Smartwatch (~$150) powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear processor & Wear OS by Google is an entry-level option for those who want to try a full-fledged watch with payment (NFC) and designed for active sports (GPS / IP68) 2022. This is the youngest model in the “Pro” line and on a fairly old, but proven processor and with the ability ton third-party applications from Google Play. Watches are worth their money, and will be a good choice among analogues. As a feature of the watch, I can single out a special FSTN display with high contrast and low consumption, which implements the Always on Display function.

The packaging pleased me – a serious watch from a serious manufacturer. Movobi’s “Pro” line looks quite professional both against the background of other TicWatch models (S-, C-, E- and other models) and against the background of first-tier brands (Galaxy, HONOR/Huawei Watch and others).

Inside, against the background of velvet cardboard, the TicWatch Pro watch is neatly installed. This option would be an appropriate gift for a friend / colleague or relative. Especially if a person wanted a watch with Google Pay or WearOS.

The package includes a special USB cable with a magnetic base for charging and synchronization with a computer, as well as a user manual

There are protective (transport) films on the glass and the bottom surface. They must be removed for the clock to work correctly. To protect the glass, you can choose special films or tempered glass, since the display is recessed relative to the bezel level.

The user manual contains information in English, including links to the official website and smartphone application. The case is made of impact-resistant plastic, with a fixed bezel on top.

There are two physical buttons on the side for menu control and shortcut functions. The screen is quite bright and clear. An additional layer of monochrome display is also provided for continuous display of information.

Despite the presence of a hole for a microphone, the watch is protected with IP68 level. That is, you can take a shower and swim in the pool without taking off your watch.

The strap is made of leatherette, quite good quality. Fastening standard, with a quick lock and a width of 22 mm. It is quite possible to replace it with another strap or a metal bracelet that is suitable in width.

Please note that on the bottom side there are not only contacts for recharging, but also for synchronization with a computer (USB), that is, the device storage (4 GB) is available for transferring, for example, audio recordings. In the center is an activity sensor that allows you to measure heart rate and other parameters when playing sports.

Complete charging is a round magnetic base with contacts. Runs on any 5V USB power source. Can be recharged even from a computer / laptop.

The watch has a popular operating system for wearable gadgets – Wear OS by Google. Out of the box, the English language works in the menu and support for Cyrillic fonts. A number of settings are available, it is possible to connect via Wi-Fi to your home network, as well as install applications from the Play Market. Separately, I will highlight the work of AoD in the form of a monochrome display.

To work with your smartphone, you need to install the appropriate version of the Wear OS by Google app.

The interface is more than simple, allows you to perform basic watch settings (binding, updating, choosing a watch face), and involves exporting statistics to separate applications, such as Google FIT.

The application has a “take a remote screenshot” function, so next there will be frames from the watch itself. This is the main screen, one of the downloaded watch faces, a circular menu of functions and applications, a card with a daily activity report, a list of available workouts, etc. The voice assistant (Google assistant) works.

They sit quite comfortably on the hand. The standard strap is soft, if desired, you can replace it with a silicone one – see for yourself.

A traditional comparison of smartwatches with other models, which allows you to determine both the size and the characteristics / cost of the models. For starters, the Amazfit GTR 3 Pro smartwatch with ZeppOS. This is a fresh model, also with an operating system and third-party applications. In terms of autonomy and hardware, it will be more interesting than TicWatch Pro. But I note that Amazfit does not support NFC payment.

One of the best watches in its class is the AMAZFIT T-Rex Pro smartwatch with MIL-810G-STD and IP68 protection. The T-Rex Pro watch is a good representative of the second generation of Amazfit smartwatches, especially in terms of features, hardware and sensor set. In terms of protection, they will be even more serious than TicWatch Pro, especially considering the resistance to temperature and pressure changes, stronger water protection, etc. The autonomy of Amazfit will be higher, I also note a more accurate biomonitoring sensor (two-specm, measures several parameters at once) and a more in-depth analysis of statistics, as well as the ability to automatically recognize the type of activity.

Also, for comparison, I apply the flagship watch from Huami – the Zepp Z model in a stainless steel case. I note the rotary button for scrolling through the menu of Zepp Z – very convenient.

One way or another, the TicWatch Pro smart watch is a pretty good entry-level option. The model is far from new, but time-tested. There is everything you need – NFC, GPS, protection against water and dirt. The processor performance is a bit lacking (SD Wear 2100), but as an alternative, you can choose the updated TicWatch Pro 3 (SD Wear 4100), though a little more expensive. In any case, TicWatch Pro is a good option for both sports and every day.
