Review of Roborock S7:Robotic Vacuum Cleaner That Can Lift a Napkin On Carpets & Self-Clean 2022.
Hello everyone! Finally, the long-awaited flagship Roborock S7, which went on sale at the end of March 2021, came to my review. So, just a couple of weeks ago, this robot vacuum cleaner began to be sold in EU/US, already a English version, which ended up in our test room. And all this time we tested it in different conditions in order to reveal the new functionality as detailed as possible. And looking ahead, I can say that the robot pleasantly surprised in many aspects, some of them were generally unexpected, so I advise you to read the review carefully from start to finish! The price at the time of preparing the review is 500 dollars. The aliexpress store gives the first customers a branded thermos and an umbrella from the Roborock company and this is a nice bonus. To begin with, I’ll briefly tell you about what has changed in the Roborock S7.
The first major upgrade is the redesigned TPU center brush. The new design of the brush provides less winding of hair and wool, and, accordingly, more comfortable handling of the robot.

The second, more important upgrade is the new unique VibraRise technology, which literally translates as “vibration” and “lift”. The napkin nozzle is now capable of vibrating at a frequency of up to 3000 times per minute, which allows you to wipe more difficult dirt off the floor. At the same time, when driving onto carpets, as well as when docking with a charging station, the platform with a napkin also rises by about 5 mm so that the flooring does not deteriorate from an excess of moisture.
And last but not least – the optional Roborock S7 supports a self-cleaning base. This is the first robot vacuum cleaner in the Roborock line that can self-clean at the base. Unfortunately, however, the self-cleaning station has not yet gone on sale and the robot is being sold with a conventional charging base. But at least later it will be possible to purchase it separately.
So all these innovations make the Roborock S7 one of the best robot vacuum cleaners of the first half of 2021. For us, in turn, it is important to understand how the updates really affected the robot’s capabilities and the quality of cleaning. Everything in order.

It comes with:
- Charging base. It has brushes in front of the terminals, which clean the contact pads on the robot each time it arrives at the base.
- Power adapter.
- Wet cleaning nozzle with pre-installed microfiber cloth.
- Operating instructions and instructions for connecting the robot to the network (translation into Russian is provided).
This is the whole package. It is rather meager. There are no spare consumables and accessories.

Now let’s take a look at the robot vacuum cleaner itself. The review got a model in white and in my opinion this color scheme is more practical. Fingerprints and scratches are less visible on the lid.

The first thing that catches your eye is the indicator light in front of the control panel. It glows in different colors depending on the status of the robot. For example, when cleaning, the indicator lights up blue, and when charging, green. Looks stylish enough.

There are 3 mechanical buttons on the control panel: forced return to the base for charging, start / pause and start of the local cleaning mode.
The mechanical bumper has a wall sensor on the right, and an obstacle sensor in the center. The active camera, unfortunately, was not installed in this model, but similar navigation will be implemented in the updated Roborock T7s, which will most likely be released by the end of the year.
The dust collector is located under the top cover. Next to it we see an indicator of connection to a Wi-Fi network and a reset button to factory settings.

Here is immediately an interesting point – in the robot itself there is a cover for the air inlet, which will need to be opened if there is a self-cleaning station.

Let’s go back to the dust collector. On it we see information that the container itself and the filter can be washed with water, the main thing after that is to thoroughly dry all the parts before installing into the robot. There is no protective shutter. The purified air outlet is located on the side under the very top. And the HEPA filter has changed its location. It is now at the top. This arrangement has one important advantage – the suction power of the robot vacuum cleaner will not drop as the container is loaded with garbage. The filtration system is only based on a HEPA filter and this is no longer very good. At least a mesh would be added before the filter.
And here’s an important point – in the dust collector itself, the side wall is blind, which should be docked with the inlet of the robot, hidden behind the lid. Most likely, when buying a self-cleaning station, you will have to buy a special dust collector, or it will already be included in the kit, which is very unlikely. In general, we will find out soon. The capacity of the dust collector reaches 470 ml.

Retrieved by pressing a button. He also changed his appearance a little. We see that there is no pump inside, it is installed in the robot itself, and there is only a tube in the tank.
When the filler valve is opened, we see an additional mesh inside, which will prevent debris or other solid particles from entering the water supply system, this is a plus. The tank itself holds up to 300 ml of water.
Now let’s take a look at how the Roborock S7 is arranged from below. It has 6 fall protection sensors. There is a carpet detection sensor in front. One side brush. It has an updated design – silicone, five-beam. In the center we see a new turbo brush. The petals are quite elastic, made with high quality. The brush can be disassembled on both sides for cleaning hair and fur.

And here, in fact, a platform with a napkin. The napkin, as before, is attached with Velcro and a groove. In the center of the platform we see a moving part, which vibrates. The area of the movable zone is not very large, so further we will consider in detail in tests how effective this solution is in general. But the napkin itself has become much denser.

An important point that was asked to check is whether it is possible to replace the silicone brush with a bristly-petal one, which is found in all other robots of the Roborock family. So the brush then falls into the grooves, its length has not changed. But the length of the bristles itself is longer, so the brush does not scroll well. During the tests, I will show the difference in the cleaning quality of each brush.

It is also worth noting that self-cleaning in the Roborock S7 occurs through the main suction port, so there is a fairly large gap between the brush and the nozzle. This also has its own plus, which I will talk about during the tests.
In general, by design, I have no complaints about this robot. It is assembled very efficiently and all the details are competently worked out. Go ahead.

In terms of characteristics, unfortunately, nothing has changed much.
Roborock S7 is controlled both through Mi Home and through the proprietary Roborock mobile app. I did not find any difference in functions between these applications, and no connection problems were identified.
As an example, I will demonstrate the functionality of the Roborock application.
On the main work panel, the robot built a map and automatically zoned it into rooms. In the settings section, we first see the ability to manage the map. The Roborock S7 is of course capable of storing several unique cards in memory. In the settings of the vacuum cleaner itself, you can change the name of the robot, turn off the indicator lights, block the buttons on the body from children or animals that can accidentally press them, set up the “do not disturb” mode and select the area units.
There is a separate section for carpet cleaning settings. And we will now dwell on this section in detail, since it is very interesting and important. The very first point you are asked to turn on the automatic power increase when driving on carpets, which I recommend doing.

But below is just the functionality associated with the new VibraRise lifting platform. The Auto-carpet mode is just the automatic lifting of the napkin when a carpet is detected. This is how it works:
When the robot detects the carpet, it lifts the napkin, rides the carpet around the perimeter, detecting its edges, and then cleans the carpet inside the perimeter. After that, the Roborock S7 moves off the carpet and performs dry and wet cleaning of the entire available area with the platform already lowered to the floor. In my case, in my test room, the rug is medium pile, and indeed the height of the napkin lift provides a gap between the wet napkin and the carpet. As a result, after the robot passes, the carpet is dry and free of debris. Wow!
The second mode is called Avoid Carpets. It is recommended to turn it on if you have very fluffy carpets in your house and the lifting height of the napkin is not enough to provide clearance. In this mode, when determining the carpet, the robot, again, gently circles it along the perimeter, but with the napkin already lowered to the floor. As a result, Roborock S7 will perform dry and wet cleaning of the entire available area except carpets, they will remain intact and no need to set exclusion zones for the wet cleaning mode, as it was done before.
Well, the third, very strange mode, is called “Vibration on the carpet.” In this mode, the Roborock S7 completely ignores carpets in dry and wet mode, driving over them with the napkin lowered. What this is for is not entirely clear.

In addition, the robot vacuum cleaner marks carpets on the map as objects, and you can remove them from the map or change the size of the carpet zones if you want.
Let’s go back to the overview of the rest of the functions. You can adjust the volume of voice announcements and select their language. The Russian version of the Roborock S7 speaks Russian. In the setting for cleaning according to the schedule, you can choose the time, days of the week, the cleaning mode, the rooms you want, and even choose the appropriate map.
Additionally, you can send the robot to the desired point on the map for local cleaning, switch to manual control mode, view the cleaning log, track the status of consumables and, if necessary, update the firmware. I installed the current version immediately. You can also share the control with other users and enable the robot vacuum cleaner to search for a sound signal.
Let’s go back to the main work panel. Here you can choose one of 3 main cleaning modes: automatic for the entire available area, the choice of the necessary rooms for cleaning and the number of passes for each room (from 1 to 3), as well as the choice of cleaning zones on the map and, accordingly, the number of passes for each zone.

In the map mode, you can set virtual walls, general exclusion zones and separate exclusion zones for wet cleaning mode.

You can edit rooms, combining several into one, or vice versa, dividing the room into separate zones. You can also name each room if needed. It is also possible to customize the sequence of cleaning rooms and even select an individual cleaning mode for each room. This is a big plus.
Well, in fact, you can manually adjust the required suction power and the degree of wetting of the napkin, as well as choose a cleaning mode called “Intensive”, in which the Roborock S7 performs only wet cleaning with vibration.

This is all the functionality of the application and we can say that there are all the basic possibilities for controlling the robot vacuum cleaner and setting the optimal cleaning mode.
So far, for some reason, when connecting to Yandex.Alice, this robot vacuum cleaner is not in the list of devices, but I think that the situation will change in the near future, or there is simply something wrong in my case. All functions are duplicated in the Mi Home application.

The first step is to check the Roborock S7 navigation in the obstacle room. First, the robot vacuum cleaner goes through the perimeter of the room, after which it moves on to cleaning the entire available area with a snake. The dryer legs did not give him any problems, while the robot was able to separately wrap around the box and each chair leg. After completing the cleaning cycle, the device returned to the base.
Navigating within a room
With regard to navigation within the entire house, the Auto-carpet mode was selected because the living room and bedroom have medium pile carpets. We can say that they are fluffy. So the Roborock S7 cleans room by room, first along the perimeter, then with a snake. Whenever a carpet is found, it first cleans the carpet itself with the platform raised. Because of this, the cleaning speed suffers a little, but you do not need to turn on the robot twice for wet cleaning and a separate dry one on carpets. As a result, the robot vacuum cleaner removed 32 square meters of usable area in 37 minutes, while analogues clean this area in 25-30 minutes.

But I have already explained the reasons, and speaking of navigation, it is at a very high level. There are no missed areas, the floor has been cleaned, the carpets are dry and clean. Test passed successfully!
But the most surprising moment of testing for me – checking the suction power. This is how the stand looks like in its original state:

During the launches, I heard increased noise during operation and realized that the new structure of the brush could have a positive effect on the quality of suction of debris from the cracks. But the result surprised me a lot. The Roborock S7 was able to suck out debris from slots up to 10 mm deep, like the most powerful robotic vacuum cleaners that we had on the test and which claimed 3000-4000 Pa. Let me remind you that the Roborock S7 has 2500 Pa, like the S6 MaxV , which was able to suck out debris only from a 2 mm gap.
This robot vacuum cleaner would have come a little earlier – it would surely lead the ranking of the most powerful robotic vacuum cleaners of 2021 . The test passed successfully. The result is amazing!

Now let’s check how the Roborock S7 handles the collection of dry waste on a laminate. At the stand, we scattered dust, wool, hair, small household waste and even cat litter and food. So the robot vacuum cleaner collected all the garbage without any problems, leaving only a little dust in the corners. And here’s the plus point in that the robot collects and larger garbage, for example, cat litter. The brush is not blocked because there is a large enough gap between it and the suction nozzle for self-cleaning. This is a plus.

Speaking of the condition of the dust container and brushes, most of the debris, including wool and hair, is collected in the container. A very small amount of hair is wound around the central brush, which is easy to clean:

By the way, it is important to note that a knife with a brush for cleaning the dust collector and the central brush was removed from the complete set of this robot. In my opinion, he still would not hurt.
Well, let’s check how the bristly-petal brush, which was installed in previous models, performs in the same test. The state of the stand is the same – there is no debris left. Now we look at the brush:

And this is what I was talking about at the beginning. The diameter of the pile is larger and therefore the free movement of the brush is difficult, and, accordingly, the debris has nowhere to go, it is simply stuffed between the sections of the brush. This is no good.
I do not recommend changing the brush to a bristly-petal, although it is suitable. Unless, if you try to experiment and manually evenly cut off the pile by about a millimeter, so that the diameter of the brush is smaller. It may then be more efficient in throwing debris into the suction port. Who has tried or will try, please share your experience in the comments, I will be grateful!

The Roborock S7 cleans carpets well. The increased suction power certainly influenced this. But in my opinion, the old version of the bristly petal brush is still better for cleaning carpets. The difference is small, but there is.
And here there will be two tests. First, a standard check – how a robot vacuum cleaner wipes a little dried dirt from the floor. With this task he coped well. There was only a small strip along the plinth, from where all the robotic vacuum cleaners that we had on the test were not able to wash out the dirt, due to their design features.

Now let’s check how effective the vibrating module itself is. Sauce and coffee were spilled on the stand, after which the stains dried up within 24 hours. And then there is a double impression of the robot.
Firstly, the wheelbase is not adapted to work in such conditions, in contrast to specialized crawler -mounted floor polishers . The wheels are stuffed with sauce and simply slip, so the robot cannot move in an even snake to efficiently clean the entire available area. Look at the state of the robot yourself after driving:

Secondly, even if you periodically manually clean the wheels and the swivel roller so that the robot can continue cleaning, the vibrating platform itself does not give the expected result. Only after 20 minutes of driving was the robot able to wipe off the stains. While the robotic floor polishers already cope with this task in the second or third pass along the stand. This is what I talked about when reviewing the appearance – the movable section is quite small, and the vibration amplitude is not comparable to floor polishers, so there is no point in using this robot vacuum cleaner for such purposes.
I even additionally decided to check how the Viomi S9 , which was also released in 2021 and claims to be one of the best, will cope with a similar task .

So here he is with an ordinary napkin and a fixed nozzle and then quickly wiped off the same stains from the stand. It took him just under 10 minutes. It is also incomparable with robotic floor polishers, but this proves that the vibrating platform does not win in terms of efficiency, but rather a marketing move at the moment.
Perhaps, in some specific situations, these vibrations really increase the quality of cleaning, but now I cannot confirm this.

In addition, I’ll show you how the Roborock S7 vacuums and mops the floor at the same time. No complaints, the quality of the cleaning is really very high. Test passed successfully!

Now let’s check what kind of obstacles the Roborock S7 is capable of crossing. So he has small problems with cross-country ability even without an installed attachment. He moves 15 mm nut without any problems, but he cannot always overcome a 20 mm nut, and this is not very good.

Previous robots of the Roborock family were more walkable. And with an installed platform for wet cleaning, it cannot even move a 15 mm threshold, like other robotic vacuum cleaners, since the platform clings to an obstacle. This is important to consider.

Roborock still has problems driving through dark surfaces. It recognizes a black mat as a difference in height, although the sensors do not immediately detect a dark color and even in some cases the robot is able to drive over the mat. But for some reason he begins to ride in circles, as if around the leg of a chair and sometimes backs away. So at the moment the problem is not completely fixed, but better than it was before.

And finally, we measure the noise level of the Roborock S7 in different modes. At the minimum power, the noise level is in the range of 62-64 dB, in the middle mode it can reach 67 dB, in the Turbo mode the noise level reaches 71 dB, and at the maximum power the peak value was 74 dB.
Yes, this robot vacuum cleaner is quite noisy, but this is primarily due to the high suction power, so there are no particular complaints.
The Roborock S7 has been reviewed and tested in detail. And, in my opinion, it was not in vain that the decision was made to put it in first place in the ranking of the best robotic vacuum cleaners of 2022 , the link to which is posted in the description of the video. According to our rating system, he was able to score 84 out of 100 points , 5 of which he received obviously for the base for self-cleaning, which will be released a little later. So far, the real score for the robot is 79 points in this configuration.
Now I will express my own opinion about this robot vacuum cleaner after detailed acquaintance and testing. I definitely liked the following:
- Good lidar based navigation.
- High suction power.
- The lifting mechanism of the napkin, thanks to which the simultaneous dry and wet cleaning is now possible in one cleaning cycle on different surfaces without any problems.
- The revamped center brush cleans up coiled hair and wool better.
- High build quality.
- Sophisticated design with a dust collector and a water tank installed at the same time.
- All advanced functionality in the application.
- Good quality wet and dry cleaning.
- Brand reliability.
- A self-cleaning base will be available soon .
As for the disadvantages, it is worth highlighting:
- The vibrating platform has not been proven to be effective.
- The robot vacuum cleaner is afraid of dark coatings.
- The passability of obstacles has become a little worse.
- The self-cleaning base is not on sale yet and there is no understanding when it will appear.
In general, the shortcomings are not very significant and are more likely related to comments. Actually, and the fact that they have decided not to put an active camera on the mechanical bumper for now, but will add it to a new model, which will be released even later. If this robot also had an object recognition function, in my opinion it would be the best and most versatile wet and dry robot vacuum cleaner.
But in any case, for its money, the robot is very interesting for those who choose a robot vacuum cleaner for dry and wet cleaning , while there are carpets at home – the Roborock S7 is a very good option for buying. The lifting mechanism of the mop is taking the robot vacuum cleaner market to a new level, which, I am sure, will still actively develop in the coming years.
